Course Information

Course Description:
My name is Mr. Mahna and I will be your Algebra 2B (Extension Series) teacher this trimester. I am excited to get to know you throughout the year and help you develop the Algebra skills in order to move onto higher math classes during your high school career. I FIRMLY believe that every student who enters my classroom on the first day has the ability to pass this class as long as they put in the required effort from day one. I am available to help before school or after school every day, if necessary, to help you make your hard work pay off. I encourage parents/guardians to keep in touch via phone or e-mail. Family involvement is important to the success of students. I am happy to sit down with family members and discuss goals for each student.

Course Objectives: 

This is a rigorous course in basic Algebra concepts.  The course will center around four big ideas.  These are: 

• Definition of a mathematical function and the connections between different representations of a function;
• Symbolic representation and manipulation of mathematical ideas;
• Radical, Exponential and Logarithmic equations and inequalities, and the representation of quantitative relationships in words, equations, graphs, and tables.
• Throughout the trimester students will further their understanding in problem solving and work with their peers in a cooperative learning environment.

Grading Policy 

Assignments - 30%

• Notebooks: This would be a record for your daily work. This is your record, so organize it the way it would be most helpful for you. I will do periodic checks to make sure you are keeping up on this.   
• Homework: Homework will be assigned frequently and checked for completion next day in class. You will do your homework assignments in your notebooks or worksheets.  Please bring these notebooks to class every day. I will do my best to post any assignments online. At the end of the week, we will have a homework quiz. Scores on this quiz will determine your homework grade. You can use your notebook on this short quiz.

Assessments      70%       

Quizzes: These are basically short tests. The quiz will cover the topics we covered in class. These quizzes are meant to help you and me to understand what we need to spend more time before we take a unit test. During these quizzes, you are not allowed to use notes.

Unit Tests: There will be a cumulative test at the end of each unit. This category is the biggest portion of your grade. Please take each test seriously. Before each test, we will have a unit review. This will usually be time for you to work in groups and ask questions that you might have.

Students are not allowed retakes on tests and quizzes. Students may do test corrections for partial credit; more details will be shared before the first test.
Trimester Finals: There will be a cumulative final exam at the end of the trimester. All the topics covered in the trimester will be tested on this exam. We will spend some time reviewing all the topics from the trimester before the finals.
