Course Information

Course Description: In this course students will engage with a variety of literature, non-fiction texts, and multimedia from a diverse range of authors and creators. This course aligns with 12th grade common core standards will focus on building college-level reading, writing, discussion and critical thinking skills in order for students to be ready to leave high school with the skills necessary for success in college and career. This course is designed to not only support students with the academic skills for college readiness, but also to support them in creating a plan that they are confident in pursuing when they leave high school. Students should come to class with a growth mindset and ready to participate in high level analysis, writing, and discussion.

Grading Categories:

  • Community Skills (10% of grade): in order to be as successful as possible, it is important that students not only complete assigned work, but engage in being citizens of the classroom. Students will earn a citizenship grade by doing the following:
    • Place their phone in the phone pocket to limit their distractions
    • Engaged with learning and activities
    • Being in class on time
    • Appropriately interacting with their peers
  • Assignment (40% of grade): in order for students to do well and meet or exceed standard on the assessments (essays, presentations, etc.) students will need to participate in the daily activities and assignments. These assignments and activities are meant to teach students skills and give them time to learn and practice before receiving an assessment grade. Not every single daily assignment will be graded. However, if everything is turned in at the end of the week, they will receive weekly assignment points in the grade book. If students are in class but do not complete the daily assignments, they cannot be made up later. If students are absent with an excused absence, they will have the amount of days they were absent to complete daily assignments.
  • Assessments (50% of grade): students will complete various assessments, which will make up the largest portion of their grade. This is their chance to show their understanding of the academic skills we will be learning throughout the trimester. By engaging in citizenship and weekly assignments students are setting themselves up to be more successful with the assessments.
