Welcome to Asian & Asian American Literature & Film!

In this elective language arts course we will study and engage with Asian and Asian American authors of literature, nonfiction texts, and film. This class aligns with 9th-10th grade common core standards, and will focus on building reading, writing, speaking and critical thinking skills.

We will organize our learning in four units over the trimester: identity, nature, genre fiction, and representation. You are expected to come to class prepared and ready to engage with others on interesting discussion points. We will consider the point of view and context of the texts we study, and will make comparisons among a variety of Asian and Asian American literary voices to gain a multi-faceted understanding of Asian and Asian American culture and values. We will use essential questions to deepen our critical thinking, analysis and synthesis.

Essential Questions
How has Asian culture influenced American culture?
How are Asians represented in the U.S.?
What lessons can we learn from Asian and Asian American stories?
How does literature help us make connections between ourselves and the world around us?

Please come to class with a charged Chromebook every day.

Cell phone use is not permitted during class. Phones should be placed in pocket holders for the entire class period.
