Course Description: The Medical Terminology course is designed to introduce students to the structure of medical terms, including prefixes, suffixes, word roots, combining forms, and singular and plural forms, plus medical abbreviations and acronyms. The course allows students to achieve comprehension of medical vocabulary appropriate to medical procedures, human anatomy and physiology, and pathophysiology. Knowledge of medical terminology enhances the student’s ability to successfully secure employment or pursue advanced education in health care.
Course Objectives:
Describe the fundamental elements that are used to build medical words.
· Identify common word roots, prefixes, and suffixes used in medical terminology.
· Explain the use of abbreviations when writing and documenting data.
· Describe selected medical and surgical specialties, giving the scope of practice and physician’s title.
· Describe and explain the use of SOAP notes in a healthcare setting.
Grading Policy:
In order to be most successful, turning your work in on time is ideal. I will accept late a week past the due date for 50% of the points given. I know things happen, just talk to me if there are any issues.
Grade categories and percentages:
- Assignments: 40%
- Assessments: 50%
- Participation: 10%
