Course Information

Course Description: This course is for students who have successfully completed Math Analysis and Trigonometry at an advanced level.  This course will be fast paced similar to a college level calculus course.  Students should expect to be challenged during each lesson and be ready to explore the inner workings of all first year calculus concepts.  In the month of May students will have the opportunity to take the AP Calculus AB test.

Course Objectives:  By successfully completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Work with functions represented in a variety of ways and understand the connections among these representations.
  • Understand the meaning of the derivative in terms of a rate of change and local linear approximation, and use derivatives to solve a variety of problems.
  • Understand the relationship between the derivative and the definite integral.
  • Communicate mathematics both orally and in well-written sentences to explain solutions to problems.
  • Model a written description of a physical situation with a function, a differential equation, or an integral.
  • Use technology to help solve problems, experiment, interpret results, and verify conclusions.
  • Determine the reasonableness of solutions, including sign, size, relative accuracy, and units of measurement.
  • Develop an appreciation of calculus as a coherent body of knowledge and as a human accomplishment.

Grading Policy:

Items to be graded in this class will fall into two major categories:

  1. Assignments/Class activities (20%) You will be assigned daily book homework assignments. These will be checked for completeness daily. In addition, you will be assigned weekly graded assignments, either online or on paper. These will be graded for correctness.
