Course Description

The objective of the course is to develop English. Students accomplish this through text analysis and interpretation, academic writing, and short oral presentations.   

Curriculum

Renton School District uses Edge, a curriculum focused on all aspects of language development: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  Edge is organized into units by theme. Students will read different types of text to explore a variety of genres. Each unit includes vocabulary development, reading strategies, grammar, critical thinking, and discussion skills. Students are provided a notebook and practice book. These are for use in the classroom.

Grading Policy

Classwork will be weighted as follows:

1. Summative - 50% Summative assessments include presentations, longer writing assignments, projects, and exams.
2. Formative - 40% Formative assessments are a combination of assignments, quizzes, short texts, grammar practice, and other learning experiences.
3. Effort- 10% The effort grade captures how the student engages with their own learning and participates in the learning environment.

Inauthentic Work

Any work that is copied from a peer, copied from the internet, or generated by AI will receive at most 60%, or a D.

Essays, research papers, or presentations that include text that is not properly cited, will receive an F, and be reported for plagiarism. 

Final Due Dates

Students have the time during a unit to complete all tasks, assignments and summative assessments for that unit. Grades are finalized one week after the closing of the unit.
