Course Description:

This is a class in which students will learn about structures and functions of the human body. They will discover basic information about cells and how the body is organized by doing a brief overview of all the body systems. Several body systems will be studied in depth, with the remainder being covered in the following trimesters.  Students will also explore diseases and disorders related to the systems of study, including causes, symptoms, and treatments.  They will discover how the body maintains itself through growth, balance and fighting disease.

Course Objectives:

  • Define anatomy and physiology
  • Relate the importance and purpose of medical terminology to anatomy, physiology and disease.
  • Construct and define medical terms using word roots, prefixes and suffixes
  • Explain the concept and importance of homeostasis
  • Define organs and systems
  • Understand how the body is organized
  • Define body planes and associated directional terms
  • Explain how body parts and systems are interdependent
  • Demonstrate proper use and care of laboratory equipment
  • Identify the parts of all eleven body systems, as well as the sensory organs
  • Describe the functions of all body systems and their related organs
  • Describe some diseases and disorders of each body system studied.
  • Define types of body movements.
  • Explain step-by-step body processes such as muscular contraction and cardiac circulation
  • Use proper medical terminology to describe and explain Anatomy and Physiology

Grading Policy:

In order to be most successful, turning your work in on time is ideal. I know things happen and will accept late work up until the end of each unit. Those dates will be determined as the trimester goes. Students will need to be responsible to keep track of these dates when announced or check on canvas for updates.
