Course Information
Course Description: The AP Chemistry course provides students with a college-level foundation to support future advanced coursework in chemistry. Students cultivate their understanding of chemistry through inquiry-based investigations, as they explore content such as: atomic structure, intermolecular forces and bonding, chemical reactions, kinetics, thermodynamics, and equilibrium.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
“The AP Chemistry course provides students with a college-level foundation to support future advanced coursework in chemistry. Students cultivate their understanding of chemistry through inquiry-based investigations, as they explore content such as: atomic structure, intermolecular forces and bonding, chemical reactions, kinetics, thermodynamics, and equilibrium. The AP Chemistry course is designed to be the equivalent of the general chemistry course usually taken during the first college year. - Students are encouraged to keep all handwritten work in a binder, folder or other organizational system

GRADING DESIGN
The grading design of this course is strongly influenced by student display of effort toward mastery of the content. The course grade is determined by a combination of all the assignments and assessments per trimester. Students may resubmit work or complete test corrections to improve scores. All resubmitted work is due one week before finals for that trimester begin. The unit distributions are representative of the AP exam distributions provided in the AP Chemistry Course & Exam Description Links to an external site., the time we spend on each topic will relate to these distributions.
Other course grading policies include the following:
- Students are encouraged to resubmit work and complete test corrections to improve original scores.
- We will complete 11-16 required labs throughout the school year- portions of these labs will be graded.
LATE AND MISSING WORK POLICY
- Late work will be accepted without penalty so long as the assignment has not been passed back. After the assignment is passed back there will be a maximum penalty of 10% points reduced due to turn in date. All formative assessments are due no later than the end of the unit. Labs cannot be completed once the materials have been put away- a student who misses a lab must suggest an alternative to receive points in place of performing the lab. Once student and instructor agree- the student may complete the work and submit no later than one week before finals for that trimester.
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS
- Doing your best to come to class prepared and with questions you want to ask for clarification.
- Collaborating with your classmates to support and learn from one another.
- Checking CANVAS regularly to keep up with daily work, especially when absent.
- Asking for help when you need it.
Work for this course will be submitted on paper, AP Classroom, or CANVAS. All assignment materials and links will be posted regularly via our class CANVAS site.
HOMEWORK POLICIES
- Expect homework everyday. Form study groups- you will need them. This is a high level academic course. Be prepared to work, struggle, and grow from the experience. You will have homework daily.
ATTENDANCE AND MAKEUP WORK
Attendance in all classes is imperative for academic success throughout the school year. Being prepared for class includes completing any necessary assignments, being in class on time and participating actively in learning each class period. Each tardy and/or absence means missed instruction, loss of work time, and could ultimately lead to lower grades.
COMMUNICATION
Grades will be updated regularly in SKYWARD. Grade reports will be sent out multiple times per trimester. Assignment materials will be posted to CANVAS, while students may work on assignments in AP Classroom and on Google Drive. Assignments will be turned in through CANVAS if submitted virtually.
