Course Information

Course Description & Course Objectives

Welcome to Ms. Moore's Photography I class!  I'm so excited to have you in my class!

I've been a professional photographer for over 20 years, and still run my own photography business to this day.  I'm excited to share my creativity and knowledge with you so that you can learn how to take amazing photographs!

As a business owner and CTE teacher, my goal is also to teach you the life skills necessary for you to be successful in the future.  In light of that, come to class, be on time, and be there to engage in class,  just like you would a regular job.  If you start with these basic steps, I know you'll be successful!

In Photography I class, we will be learning both the techniques AND the art of taking good photographs!

What does that mean?  It means that like any art form, photography (yes, photography is an art form!) has:

1. A technical side to it, which basically is learning how to make adjustments to your camera's settings (shutter speed, aperture and ISO) so you can control the outcome of your photograph such as lighting, exposure, lens blur, and more.

2.  But photography also has an artistic side to it , which is learning how to take a creative pictures or that "artistic eye" as people like to say.  This includes things like learning how to compose or arrange a photograph and using creative approaches to achieve that.

3. The last component of a good photograph is learning how to edit.  We focus on realistic editing in this class to enhance what should already be a good photo.  We will use what's called "Industry Standard" software, which means that we will be editing our images with the same software that the professional do: Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.

When you are able to learn all 3 of these things, you will start to take amazing photographs!  All my lessons in this class are designed to teach you camera techniques, compositional techniques and editing skills.

Grading Policy (late work, etc)

Here's the general breakdown of the types of assignments we'll do and the points they are worth:

-10 pts each- Photographers of the Day or "PODs": You will be given a photographer to look up and answer some questions about their work.  We will do 1-2 of these per week.  Stay on top of these because although they are only 10 points each, they add up over the course of a trimester.

-20 pts each- Camera assignments:  These are assignments where you use the camera to take photos for a specific type of artistic composition or camera technique.  These are larger assignments and you will be given several days to complete them.  They include warm ups for the lesson, taking the photos and editing them.  For each assignment you will be given different requirements for the number of photos needed and files that need to be turned in.

-10 pts each- Miscellaneous assignments:  These include smaller assignments that will help you understand camera settings, photography vocabulary, elements of art/photography and more!  Again, stay on top of these smaller assignments because they are the building blocks of helping you understand your camera so that you can be successful in the bigger assignments.

-50 pts- Website Portfolio (final):  Your final project will be to build your own website to showcase your photographs.  This will include making a logo for your photography "business", and creating a website with links to each of your photography lessons where you will showcase your best 3-5 images from each lesson.  As long as you stay on top of your weekly Camera assignments, this final project should be an easy 100 pts.

My teaching philosophy is one of relationship and mutual respect.  I am here to mentor and teach you both in photography and in life skills!  Please know I have an open door policy and that there is no "dumb" question.  YOU are my priority, so please know that you can come to me any time for help and support, I'm here for YOU!
