Sociology
Teacher: Mollie Price (Ms. Price)
Room 110
Welcome to Sociology!
The curriculum is modeled after College-Level Sociology 101 courses and has been workshopped with Sociology Professors and experts on the Sociology of Gender and Race.
The projects for this class have been designed with resources from a broad range of institutions and individuals, including the City of Renton, Stanford University's d.school, Leadership Tomorrow, and the nonprofit formerly known as Seattle Against Slavery.
It is vitally important to know that modern US-American Sociology - and this class - is predicated on the notion that racism, sexism, and ableism are real, and that things we might think of as fixed - like gender, school, or family - are socially constructed. Comments or actions that invalidate someone's lived experience and are transphobic, racist, sexist, nativist, or ableist are not okay in this class (or any class!).
COURSE OVERVIEW:
This class is group-based, discussion-based, and project-based.
We will begin our course by learning about the Major Theories in Sociology, then dive into different Sociological Research Methods.
After you have those foundations under your belt, we'll embark on an exploration of the Social Construction of Race and the Social Construction of Gender.
The class will conclude with a large-scale, multi-week research endeavor called the Renton Healthy Communities Project, which has been developed with resources from the City of Renton and local nonprofits.
COURSE LOGISTICS:
Late work policy:
Late work submitted within the Unit will be accepted for partial credit (10% reduction per day, up to 50%) except in important circumstances or if you miss something for a group project that screws over your group. Don’t do that! That’s just rude!
If you miss an in-class Debate or Socratic, you will not be able to make it up, but you will have the option of completing a make-up assignment IF your absence was excused.
PLEASE NOTE: If you don't turn in work, I will mark it as a "0". That "0" is probably going to remain in place for longer than you would like. This is because I need to prioritize moving on to grading more current projects, rather than prioritizing an assignment you've turned in weeks or months after the due date.
Cell phone and use of technology policy:
Every day, you must place your cell phone in your assigned cell phone pocket and use technology for class-related purposes only (no clandestine video watching or chatting...). Appropriate use of technology is worth 20% of your grade. If your phone is out or you engage in any kind of technological malfeasance, you will receive a 0. The only way you can get back to square 1 is by having 15 consecutive days of perfect use of technology.
Please make sure your families know this as well! Once lost, these points cannot be made up retroactively.
Laptop and charger policy:
Bring your chromebook and a charger every day. If you don't have your charger, please ask your classmates to borrow one. If you forget your chromebook, please ask me to write you a pass to Ms. Eide so you can borrow one for the day.
Attendance:
It is expected that you will attend this class every day, on time.
Because this class is project-based, discussion-based, and group work based, you will learn more and feel more engaged and connected to the class and its content when you attend it every day, rather than attempt to complete your work asynchronously at home or during your Math/Science/History/ELA/PE/Metal Design/Culinary, etc. class.
That being said, I know that things come up - illnesses, family emergencies, mental health needs, and school trips. I myself have a toddler in preschool - sicknesses and other unexpected things happen! If you are planning to be absent for an excused reason, please do your best to let me know ahead of time so I can help you navigate the class better when you return.
Grading scale:
Appropriate use of Technology: 20%
Assignments*: 30%
Assessments: 50%
*Oftentimes, smaller assignments are REQUIRED before you can submit your assessments. So please don't let the 30% weight belie the importance of completing that work.
The grading scale for this course is the same as the default one in Skyward.
Grade logistics:
For the most up-to-date information on your work, please check Canvas. Think of Skyward as your report card; it is not a daily progress report. If your parents/guardians would like to see your most up-to-date grade and work, please add them to your Canvas page using these directions.
