Q1: Main Idea(s) and Supporting Details/Summary
Level 4:This is about how cell phones in school are bad because they could get stolen. Students shouldn’t use them during emergencies. You wouldn’t want a ton of parents to come to school in an emergency.
This response shows that the writer grasps the central organization of this piece (claim and then a discussion of two reasons).
Level 5 The author points out that many parents really want their kids to have cell phones and then goes on to say that they can cause problems. The author argues that when kids have cell phones in school they can get stolen. Also, if too many kids call out during an emergency, that can slow the phone lines down. The NSSSS website says, “The use of cell phones by students could . . . decrease, not increase, school safety during a crisis.”
This response shows that the reader has grasped two main ideas that relate to the whole text (many parents want their kids to have cell phones, and cell phones can cause problems). The reader has also discussed several points that support the claim that cell phones can cause problems. It is worth pointing out that on high-stakes assessments, kids could call those points main ideas. They will be most apt to be nudged to do so if a question zooms in on part of the larger passage, asking “what’s the main idea of paragraphs __ to ___?” In such an instance, the reader would need to identify the big point of that specific section of the text. In this text, however, You’ll notice that there are actually two claims (or main ideas) and the reader has identified both of these.
Level 6: The author, a security guard, explains that even though parents think their kids having cell phones will make them safer, really those phones can cause security problems. He argues that having cell phones in schools can lead to theft. In addition, he also argues that during emergencies, students using cell phones can slow down phone systems and also bring parents to the school which might not be safe. The NSSSS website says, “The use of cell phones by students could . . . decrease, not increase, school safety during a crisis.”
Responses at this level identify a second main idea or a central idea from the text. This reader has fused together two main ideas/claims into what can be called a central claim. The reader has also selected details/points that support that central claim. Responses at this level will include specific details or quotes, and students will have weighed evidence, and put forward evidence that is particularly important. The details chosen suggest that the writer made the decision to weave in parts that are the most important.
