Question 3
Responses at level 3 tend to identify when the author has done something that stands out and begin to discuss why the author might have included it, but may not use precise literary language to name the technique.
Responses at level 4 can identify the technique the author uses and the goal the author is trying to achieve. In addition, responses in this level elaborate a bit on the author’s goal.
Responses at level 5 use academic language to discuss the author’s goals and techniques. Responses in this level also discuss the goals and techniques at length, considering how the author’s choices affect the text. The response might include an explanation of how the text would be different if the author made different craft choices. The student will tend to quote from the text to support thinking.
Responses at level 6 will tend to connect a discussion of craft technique to main or central idea(s) in the article. The student will discuss specific word choices made and the effects of those.
