Instructions

You will select one individual or organization who is currently working on the same issue/topic as you, and send them an email with several interview questions.

Think about the individuals'/organizations' positionality and their experiences of growing power in ethical ways. Reevaluate the list of stakeholders you put together earlier: who will be willing to share their expertise? who cares about the issue and the community, over any personal gain?

For the stakeholder list, we considered researchers, not-for-profit organizations, university departments, journalists, and activists, among other people.

Research their history, their professional and cultural journey. Your research will help you avoid mundane questions, and increase a chance of a more personalized response.

In your email:

  • Introduce yourself: mention that you are a student who is working on a project for a Civics class;
  • Express your interest in their work. Explain why you decided to reach out to them;
  • Ask 2-3 questions about their work;
  • Describe your strategy and the desired outcomes. Ask for their advice and recommendations;
  • Thank them for their time;
  • Sign your email.
