Tips for Scoring Well

General Tips:

  • Plan first! (3-5 mins)

  • Write at least 900 words

  • Three core sections (central argument/s, supporting studies, counter-argument/s)

  • All three sections should be well developed 

  • Use 2-3 studies (minimum)

  •  Aim for a range of counter-arguments (at least 2-3)

 

Criterion A: Knowledge and Understanding (Central Argument/s)

Knowledge and understanding is accurate and addresses the main topics/problems identified in the question.
  • Address the question directly by explaining your answer in response to the topic in the question (e.g. how variable x affects behaviour, or how and why research method x is used, etc.) 
  • This is your central argument (comes after the introduction)
  • Use key terminology properly (and define important concepts when necessary).

Criterion B: Use of research to support answer  (Evidence/study)

The response is supported by appropriate research which is described and explicitly linked to the question.
  • Describe at least one study accurately and in detail, including aims, methods and results. 
  • Explain the conclusions of the study. i.e. make sure you show how the study is supporting your central argument/s by applying it to the question. 
  • The study must be directly relevant to the topic in question.

Criterion C: Clarity and Organisation

The response is fully focused on the question and meets the command term requirements.
  • Make sure your answer is well-structured using paragraphs that are logically ordered.
  • Use transitions to connect the ideas throughout your response (e.g. however, moreover, on the other hand, etc.)
