Guiding questions for the week:

How do texts communicate information?
How do they render narrative?
How are they exploited to represent and express meaning?
What metalanguage helps students talk about such texts meaningfully and with authority?

It should be obvious that you need to understand how images establish meaning...you need knowledge of the visual meaning-making systems used in production of texts. For assessment purposes, visual and multimodal literacy is essential for Paper 1 and has the potential to be included in all other assessment components.

MONDAY 9/26

Opening: Brain Dump/Wellness Check in (7 min). All students present will have a personal response from me.

1. Introduce SAT Vocabulary Comics #1

2. Review the Rhetorical Triangle: Ethos, Pathos, Logos

3. Discuss rhetoric and stylistic features of these ads.

TUESDAY 9/27

1. Introduce the Language of Photography

2. Analyze these ads using the language of photography and practice the CO³ST analysis strategy.

Here is a digital handout for you for CO³ST.

3. Assignment (in class): Analyze one of the ads in the above presentation (assigned in class) and orally present CO³ST/photography language findings to the class. Absent? Write a written response to this task and turn in on paper.
