Automotive Service Job Shadow Application - Walker's Mazda/Subaru

Starting in January we have 2 shadow opportunities available at Subaru PER MONTH, 2 more coming with Mazda in a few months.  This happens during the school day so students will get an excused absence like they would for a field trip.

Before applying, keep in mind these requirements:

  • Students must be 17 years old or older
  • Students must provide their own transportation to/from Job Shadow site
  • Students must provide their own lunch

Sample agenda:

7:30 AM – 8:00 AM Arrival and Introduction
• Meet with Parts & Service managers and Service Director
• Overview of the days schedule
• Discussion of the industry and the opportunities it presents
• Facility Tour

8:00 AM – 10:00 AM Express Service Job Shadow 8:00-9:30 On the service drive with express advisor 9:30 -10:00 In the shop, observing express service dept.
• Introduction to express service department
• Observe Express service writer process’
• Chance to check in a customer’s vehicle
• Observe oil change and full circle inspection process’

10:00 AM – 10:15 AM Break

10:15 AM – 12:00 PM Main Shop Service Job Shadow 10:15-10:45 On the service drive with Main shop advisor 10:45 -11:30 In service office observing dispatcher 11:30–12:00 In the shop, observing main shop tech
• Quick intro to main shop service writer process’
• Observe dispatcher role
• Chance to work alongside the dispatcher (write internal RO, prepare used car quote, dispatch work to techs, etc.)
• Briefly observe main shop tech (ideally large job, cylinder head, EV battery, transmission replacement, etc.)

12:00 PM – 12:30 PM Lunch Break

12:30 PM – 1:30 PM Parts Department Job Shadow
• Observe Shipping/Revieing & freight Process’
• Observe back counter process’ (Express pick order, P&A, Order entry, Catalog navigation)
• Observe Front Counter process’ (Wholesale order, web order, retail customer)

1:30 PM – 2:00 PM Wrap - Up
• Meet with Parts & Service managers and Service Director
• Brief Q&A, Next steps if student is interested in pursuing a career here
