Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are higher education institutions in the United States that were established before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with the intention of primarily serving African Americans.

What is the Common Black College Application?

The Common Black College Application (CBCA) Links to an external site. is a one time is an affordable college application that can be used to apply to multiple HBCUs across the country at once. Using this application is a great option for students who want to apply to HBCUs while cutting down on traditionally high college application costs. The application only costs a one-time fee of $20. On the CBCA you will be prompted to enter the following information:

  • Personal information (name, address, Social Security number, etc.)
  • Official transcript*
  • Approximate cumulative high school GPA
  • Extracurricular activities you’ve participated in (sports, clubs, etc.)
  • Your intended major
  • Your list of top four HBCUs
