The singer and songwriter Bob Dylan once wrote, “A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night and in between does what he wants to do.”

Do you agree with this definition of success? Why or why not? Remember to use SHOWING writing practices.

Poetry Reading/Writing Cycle Day 1: COMPREHENSION

Before Reading:

Decide if you are working alone or with a partner
Get a packet and decide which poem you will read, analyze, and interpret

Reading 1

Purpose: to get familiar with the poem and to clarify understanding of vocabulary

Action: circle words that are unfamiliar, that you can't define, or that seem important

Action: look up those words and annotate a brief definition in the margins of the text

Here is a sample of annotating vocabulary in a poem.

Reading 2:

Purpose: to start to see and think about more detail in the poem

Action: draw boxes around imagery: words, phrases, lines in the poem that appeal to the senses (sight, touch/feel, sound, smell, taste)

Reading 3:

Purpose: to catch more detail and form a more complete "picture" of the poem

Action: draw boxes around any additional imagery

Action: underline repeated word, phrases, lines

Action: Can you divide the text into sections based on lines that seem to go together? Draw brackets to show how you divide the text.
