Expressing FUTURE activities

In this unit, one difference we see between the original version of the story (La quinceañera) and the alternative version (Mi quinceañera) is the timing of the activities. The original version tells actions as they happen, in the present tense:

Su madre la lleva a la celebración.   --- Her mother takes her to the celebration.

Primero baila con su papá.  --- First, she dances with her dad.

Cristina y sus amigos bailan el vals.   -- Cristina and her friends dance the waltz.

In the alternative version, Cristina tells some of the things that are going to happen at the party:

Mi madre me va a llevar a la celebración. -- My mother is going to take me...

Primero voy a bailar con mi papá. -- First, I am going to dance with my dad.

Mis amigos y yo vamos a bailar el vals. -- My friends and I are going to dance the waltz.

This story uses the verb IR (to go) + a + infinitive to say what people are going to do at some future time. To do this, use the form of IR that matches the subject, + a + the infinitive form of the action that the subject is going to do. Read these examples:

Yo voy a practicar voleibol después de la escuela hoy. I am going to practice volleyball after school.
vas a estudiar medicina en la universidad. You are going to study medicine at university.
Mi amiga va a celebrar su cumpleaños con una fiesta grande. My friend is going to celebrate her birthday with a big party.
Mi familia y yo vamos a tomar vacaciones en julio. My family and I are going to take vacation in July.
Mis hermanos van a viajar a Perú. My brothers are going to travel to Peru.
